Thunder and lightning here in SE WA

Last night a lightning storm moved thru here and started a bunch of little fires. Luckily it was accompanied by some rain and no wind. All fires were put out by local firemen who had stationed trucks all over the two counties. It was a long night.

This picture is of Lake Chelan where The Engineer's grandparents used to live. He spent many a summer day there. Picture is of the town and the fire is across the lake.

We made history - unfortunately

Fire Round-up as of 9:30am:
Okanogan Complex 227,206 acres surpassing the Carlton Complex fire of last year, this is now the largest fire in our State's history. Lightning caused 10% contained 5,140 homes threatened, 18 destroyed. Burning in trees and short grass

This picture is just amazing and it happens dozens of times a day.

Great Blue Heron

This fellow hangs around the fish canal that loops around and empties into the big river.
I've always look for him when I go thru the park.

Fire update: we are now a federal disaster area. All the towns in the area where my parents used to live are in various states of evacuation and the wind is gusting up to 56 mph. We've got the military helping and they have called for volunteers who have had some kind of training.

Smoke, smoke and more smoke

Good parlor game. Watch the news people try and get the names correct of all the towns and places we have fires (24).
We will take smoke over a fire.

The jumble on the left is a lounge seat and a chair.
These are going to Daughter and Emergency Back-up Daughter who moved to the coast

Man in bear costume harasses real bears

"Authorities want to talk to a man who donned a fairly realistic bear costume - head and all - and wore it when harassing a bear and two sows trying to feed on pink salmon in an Alaska river.
The incident happened Monday on the Chilkoot River near Haines, said Alaska Fish and Game Assistant Area Management Biologist Mark Sogge.
It wasn't immediately known what the man was trying to accomplish....."

Update on wheat harvest

Not surprising but heart warming all the same -- all the combines came from different farms to help out a farmer in need.

Wheat harvest

In a drought. Early and dusty.

my *pond*

We took out our pond for the current dogs' safety and the fact that we will be selling this house upon retirement (or we'd have remodeled). But I need my water! I have a pot full of water with a little pump below my kitchen window so I can hear the gurgling. The water moves too much for mosquitoes and I have dunks and bits I put in where I have water plants and gnome ponds.

Coin update

Did a lot of research yesterday on the internets.
I'm 100% sure it is a jeweler's fake.
I even popped it out of the setting and the ridges
are only on the top.
Then I found a forum
with a post about the exact same coin
with ridges missing in the exact same place and
right down to the jeweler's mark on the back.
So far nobody knows how it got into Eldest's room.
That is the only mystery left. Most of the people
I queried have gotten back to me.

Here I come, Pawn Stars!!

Found this in the back of Eldest Son's closet. Sent a general email to all the kids. Whose is this?

The words say "Augustus, Son of the Divine".
Mounted Roman coins on Etsy are going for about $45.
Other range from pocket change to so expensive you have to ask.

If none of the kids claims it I will take it to a jeweler to remove it from its mounting. Helps to
have both sides when trying to id a coin.

Who knows? This may be our ticket to hob-nobbing with The Donald...
Looked old Augustus up - my goodness!
Augustus  63 BC – 14 AD) was the founder of the Roman Empire  and its first  Emperor, ruling from 27 BC until his death in 14 AD.
So this coin could be over 2000 years old??

Comedy of Errors

Due to kids moving hither and yon we were on the road this weekend.
What could go wrong?
EVERYTHING!
First our truck had problems so we waited half the day to get fixed.
Because of schedules and other concerns it was only The Engineer
and two girls loading a 15 foot UHaul with everything.
N's stepdad would be driving the truck the next day.
We took off early to deliver a very large bed and mattresses to Eldest
and DIL. They have a duck pond at their new place and adorable
ducks coming by for treats. :-)
On the road north, at 10pm the truck blew up.
Diesel all over the roadway on an exit ramp we got to.
Took AAA two and a half hours to get there but they were great
when they did.
About every 5th car stopped and asked if we needed help including
a navy guy who got out of his truck and walked back to us.
State trooper babysat us on and off for a long time and he and the
tow truck drivers made sure whatever spilled was saturated with sand
and dirt.
Dropped off the truck and trailer at 1.30am.
Tow truck driver took us to the hotel. Bless him.
On the fourth floor of the hotel - no elevator.
Room was 45 degrees (yes!) - got it up to 61 overnight.
There is a step up into the bathroom - so far we have not tripped.
The car fix it place, which is supposed to be open today. Is Not Open.
The Engineer is off to rent a car.
Oh. And my wallet is missing.
Might be still in the truck - turns out the car fix it place is in a
sketchy area of town.
The moving truck with the girls is about 3 hours late but they are safe.
The Engineer found my wallet in the truck (he had to rent a car) but
the people still were not open. Call AAA. They will move it to another
place. They did not show up. They went to the other place.... The Engineer
told them to forget it. Back to the girls new place as the Uhaul was there.
The wonderful landlords helped us move stuff in and left a gift basket,
bless their hearts.
We left the truck and took our rental car (which was Canadian and fun
to figure out how to run it with the metric system) and took a scenic
route home. NOT my favorite pass. Ate dinner at 10pm north of
here and got home at 1.30am. We and the dogs (who had a babysitter)
fell into bed and we all slept until 9am.
So.
Off to return the rental car to the airport.
