Update Mystery Ash/Rain

From our paper -
"There may still be debate on the origins of the “milky rain” that fell on the Tri-Cities Feb. 6, but the Benton Clean Air Agency now knows what was in it.
A sample sent for testing included sodium, silicon and trace amounts of aluminum, potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron and manganese. There also was a trace of organic carbon.
“Nothing in the sample suggests that a public health risk existed during or after the event,” the agency said.
A leading theory, put forth by a Washington State University meteorologist, is that hurricane-force winds whipped across the Summer Lake region in south-central Oregon, picking up dry, light-colored sands and soils that were carried by strong winds to the north. The ancient lake has alkali beds.
The dust plume blew over the Tri-Cities, where rain deposited milky drops on cars and houses.
However, WSU meteorologist Nic Loyd said interpreting the sample results to tie them to a particular place was out of his area of expertise.
Other possibilities raised by different agencies included that the milky rain came from ash from a distant volcanic eruption, from dust storms in the Middle East or from a large storm that hit northwest Nevada."

Practice pod goes over the falls

Today they sent the practice tsunami pod over the falls.
The plan is for a manned pod to go over in April.

If it is there - we will try something crazy...

This is Palouse Falls. About half way between here and where youngest goes to school.
Very pretty, very dangerous.
There are plans to send a test tsunami pod over it. The local search and rescue team has
been recruited to be on stand by in case something goes wrong. And A LOT can go wrong.
Just reading thru this article in the paper gives you the heebie jeebies.
I guess it is the ultimate test (lest they try Niagara Falls after it thaws). Not sure how it mimics
a tsunami but they are kind of hard to find to test in.

the damage

The Engineer took it apart.
And sent a report to the manufacturer.
Bought it in 2005.

The dishwasher is smoking....

Yes, there is smoke pouring out of the thing.
The control panel is too hot to touch.
I opened it and it is now slowly cooling down.
All windows and doors open.
Went to the web.
Well, howdy. This happens ALL the time!
Called The Engineer and asked him if I should
turn off power to the kitchen?
Thank god I had not left the house as today is
a non-tutoring day.

So.....

Mystery ash falling on us....

This has been falling on us in this eastern part Washington and northeastern Oregon.
This is my van.
Cue the Twilight music....

So far, this is the latest --

"The National Weather Service is busy looking into where this milky rain from this morning came from. They have contacted the Cascade Volcano Observatory and they haven't had any reports of volcanic activity along the Cascades. There was a volcano eruption in Mexico but since upper level flow is coming from the Hawaii area, they don't think that's related. Pilots throughout the state also have not reported seeing ash plumbs. Next they're looking into this past summer's wildfires in Central Oregon. They say it's possible it's wildfire related but they are not certain. They say people from at least a 200 mile area have reported seeing this substance."

We've gone national, viral or whatever

SACRILEGE!

There is only ONE way to ingest chocolate.

The Mad Scientists are at it again.

"Workers at Areva in Richland have completed a fuel fabrication and testing project for a prototype reactor being developed by TerraPower in Bellevue.
TerraPower, with Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates as board chairman and an investor, is developing a traveling wave reactor. A 600 megawatt-electric reactor is planned to start up around 2022."
