Logging without roads

How do you get logs to a sawmill and papermill without roads? No roads in our little town so the logs came in by ship. Very dramatic. The ship would flood one side and the whole thing would tip and dump the logs.
I'm putting together a book about our three years there for the family. bookemon.com
(Keeps me out of all sorts of trouble.)

Logging is quite the dangerous profession.

I thought the whole logging process in the NW was so fascinating. Especially to this 'little' tree gal' from Colorado. The trees out your way are ENORMOUS!
Will check out the link to bookemon...

The ship would flood one side and the whole thing would tip and dump the logs.....yikes, how does the whole boat not go under. And are their loggers on the boat? sounds scary. But the book idea sounds fun.
