Space Needle fireworks

A rather alarming job. Getting fireworks ready to shoot off the Space Needle in Seattle.  Scary but the view is spectacular. :-)
Happy New Year to you and yours. Stay safe, stay warm and cozy.
(Abby sez happy new year to the cats even.)

more traveling adventures

Due to heavy snow fall and high avalanche danger, the pass will remain closed until daylight hours from North Bend to Ellensburg.
(Now pass is closed in the daylight hours.)

So... Eldest, DIL and Youngest and doggy got caught in this. They got turned around went back west and decided to get something to eat. They were thinking about going south and come up the Columbia River road in Oregon. We said, oh, why not go home and get some rest (this was about 10pm). Got up this morning and there was their car in front of the house.... not sure when they got in but hope they sleep in a long time.
(update - 3.30am this morning was the time of their arrival)

And I love tow truck drivers too!!

So the girls got over the pass thanks to the wonderful truck driver who helped them put on their chains. Then a light came on in the car. Pull over to the rest stop. Get out the owner's manual. Bad light to be on. Then the car would only run in reverse. Okay, really bad. Called AAA. 1-3 hours, understandable as 3/4 of the state was in a state of weather crisis.

Tow truck driver arrived. Got the car loaded up. Then a lady, in distress, came along and asked if he could help get their car back on the road at the rest stop's entrance back onto the highway. Tow truck driver said okay. And he tried, bless his heart. Turns out they were in a ditch. And..... tow truck eventually ended up in the ditch too with Daughter's car on the back.

Tow truck driver had to call a tow truck.

(The Engineer picked up the girls where they left the car to be fixed (2 hours from here) and they all got home at 11pm. A five hour trip turned into 15 hour trip. Eldest, DIL and Youngest will try the trip on Wednesday!)

I love truck drivers!!!

The girls (daughter and emergency back up daughter #2) decided to drive over the pass today.
(worry, worry, worry). They will not let you drive over unless you have chains on. So they
bought chains and a very nice, very wonderful truck driver helped them put them on. They
are over the pass. Still have a smaller pass to get over. Only about 50-ish or so miles that
do not have snow at this point on our side. Boys and DIL are planning to drive on Wednesday.
Crossing all fingers and toes.

Eldest on a trike at work (he's in the middle)... Now for a word for his sponsor. I rarely post anything identifying-ly personal on my pages. But this is the company Eldest works for  - a startup that is doing really well.

Resulted in a high speed chase thru several cow pastures and two counties.
Eventually he was caught and all cows returned to their pastures.

they tossed a coin

We had a school board race so close they were mandated by law to recount it.
And they did.
The race was tied!
At 6,178 votes each!
So they tossed a coin. One candidate was sworn in. They are both worthy and
expect the opponent will stay involved in school issues.

wind, wind and more wind

The third and fourth semi-trucks to tip over. so far.
77 mph right next door. 113 mph on top of one of our hills.
there is a school where the kids are stuck. too dangerous for buses to come get them.
wind still blowing.

so we NEED rain

wish we could get it without 60 mph winds.... here on the east side we have tons of blowing
dust which shuts down roads - those that don't have semi-trucks blocking them from blowing over.
this is Lake Washington.

really? what happened to gray?

I expect the use of the word 'anthracite' from a fashion designer or interior designer or decorator.
But from a football team?
Our colors have always been crimson and gray. This could be considered 'dark gray'. But anthracite - I had to look it up.
Regardless - hope they win! :-)

One hour from kickoff! We will be in the Crimson helmets with anthracite jerseys and pants!

abby

you can see the foot that had the surgery in the back. she is glad to be home. we bought the most comfy cone of shame they had.... but still does not look fun. what next?

question for dog owners - re abby

One of abby's nails came completely up from the quick and then fell off. never have seen this before. she is at the vet, will be sedated and the quick trimmed all the way back. then the plan is for the quick and the nail to grow back together.
she wasn't anywhere new - just patrolling her backyard. so now we are going to have two recovering from surgery around here. luckily the engineer was able to come home and has the next three days off to deal with us...
anyone seen this before?

zombie missing!

(another sign of October and Halloween)
"A member of the walking dead has vanished from a local yard.
The zombie skeleton that welcomes visitors to the L. home went missing this week. But family members don’t believe he walked away on his own.
The zombie has sentimental value. The family worked for hours on the skeleton, melting plastic sheets on it to make it different shades of brown, L. said."

for those of us missing Swatch

Tim Gunn posted this picture on Whosay a while ago. Is a crew member petting and giving tribute
to Swatch, the Mood doggy. Maybe Tim knew that the current season wasn't going to feature him much or maybe Swatch was not available for camera shots. Anyway here is Swatch - for me he is one of the best things of Project Runway along with Tim.

makes you feel old :-)

The new prime minister of Canada is Justin Trudeau.
He was born about the time his Dad, Pierre Trudeau, visited our tiny
village in British Columbia. We were out of town visiting our stateside grandparents at the time but they used our company car to drive him around the very limited roads we had.

I miss Swatch!

According to Blogging Project Runway's  interview with Joseph they only went to Mood once!

"The only time we went to Mood and were able to select our own fabric was in episode 4, the"Mary Kay" challenge."  Since we know they drag many of the aufed contestants along with
them to keep people from knowing who is aufed - this is probably the case. I also heard that the
new studio where they film is a ways from Mood.

Go team!

I am blessed with four great Nephew-in-Laws :-)
This one's team is playing Eldest Son's alma mater tomorrow. A team he rabidly supports.
So. Of course I bought him, DIL and Youngest tshirts from NIL's team. They will be the only green and yellow shirted folks in the season ticket holder's section of purple and gold.

Band geeks are the best!

So we are in week 2 of the teacher's strike.
The band kids are not allowed on school property, they can not get the schools instruments, they can not have their teacher with them.

So ---- they called the city, got permission to use a city field, they borrowed instruments for those who did not have some at home, they called around and used social media and they scheduled a practice all on their own. Go Band!!

Thunder and lightning here in SE WA

Last night a lightning storm moved thru here and started a bunch of little fires. Luckily it was accompanied by some rain and no wind. All fires were put out by local firemen who had stationed trucks all over the two counties. It was a long night.

This picture is of Lake Chelan where The Engineer's grandparents used to live. He spent many a summer day there. Picture is of the town and the fire is across the lake.

We made history - unfortunately

Fire Round-up as of 9:30am:
Okanogan Complex 227,206 acres surpassing the Carlton Complex fire of last year, this is now the largest fire in our State's history. Lightning caused 10% contained 5,140 homes threatened, 18 destroyed. Burning in trees and short grass

This picture is just amazing and it happens dozens of times a day.

(My parent's hometown from '78 to '81.)

Great Blue Heron

This fellow hangs around the fish canal that loops around and empties into the big river.
I've always look for him when I go thru the park.

Fire update: we are now a federal disaster area. All the towns in the area where my parents used to live are in various states of evacuation and the wind is gusting up to 56 mph. We've got the military helping and they have called for volunteers who have had some kind of training.

Smoke, smoke and more smoke

Good parlor game. Watch the news people try and get the names correct of all the towns and places we have fires (24).
We will take smoke over a fire.
