potting soil fire danger

Monday afternoon The Engineer I were entering our subdivision and we saw a pillar of smoke three blocks from our house. We drove by and noticed all the neighbors were out so figured 911 had been called. About half a block later we heard sirens.
Our neighbor is a fireman and he came over last night to fill us in. The homeowner had gone outside to smoke and put out the cigarette in potted plant. It turns out potting soil is flammable - with wood chips, Styrofoam and fertilizers.
The homeowners wicker furniture caught fire and the fire went into the attic. The whole ceiling was waterlogged and came down.
Fireman neighbor says they have about 4-5 potting soil fires a year in our community of 33,000.

yippity skippity, I'm going to be Mother of the Groom!

Eldest and Girlfriend have become officially engaged. Wedding to be sometime next summer. They are still hoping to get back to the PNW from Silicon Valley. We have loved Girlfriend from the very start and are thrilled to make her an official member of the family. Now I've got to redouble the diet effort...

This cracked me up

When highly dyslexic youngest was caught in WA state's first version of this and being ground into the system we used to call our then Superintendent Dolores Umbridge (the super being a woman).
Youngest was the first, and the last, class held to the tests. The accommodations offered to him were a total joke and I'm still steamed about it. So I instinctively distrust one size fits all standards. You've got to be ready for the Voldemorts out there...

Another gnome garden

I think this is the smallest gnome garden ever?

This is why the West gets a little crazy once and a while

"Delivering a major blow to state-licensed pot growers in Washington state and Colorado, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation said today it will not allow any federally-controlled water to be used on marijuana crops...."

"...The decision could hit particularly hard in Washington state, with the federal agency controlling the water supply for two-thirds of Washington state’s irrigated land."

Even though many of us work in the nuclear power, cold war cleanup and scientific research this area is huge for agriculture - both irrigated and dry land wheat. We have one of the country's biggest rivers which runs right thru the middle of it all plus two good sized rivers that empty into it within a 20 minute drive between the two rivers. This isn't about conservation, it is about the federal government not getting its act together and thwarting the direction that the people of WA decided to take it. I did not vote for the legalization of pot but my fellow citizens did and we all agree to get along after the decision is made.

More beer!

A good friend moved to Colorado and came back for a visit this week.
She came offering Coors for the gnomes. They finished the keg the fairy caught them with and are ready to start in on this wheelbarrow full of loverly Colorado beer.

Portland trip

We were in Portland,  Oregon the last two days.
Our hotel was just to the left.  We got to watch teams practicing for the Dragon Boat races
which takes place during the Rose Festival (June-ish as I recall).
This whole area has been developed since the times my family moved thru the area (65, 71 and 83)
and it is gorgeous.

Early Mother's Day present from Tar

Those of you who have been around a while might remember Her Royal Highness The Lady Bullfrog. She has been around for years. She must have passed away last winter as such was the condition of the body that Tar brought to me today. Here, MOM! For you!!!!

season of the goslings and ducklings

Our favorite time at the park. The parents bring them right up close.

the small pond

One of the smarter things we did in the big pond was keep the stocking level very low.
All fish (20 gallons per goldfish) went into the stock tank. Lots of plants is also a wise
move. Four potted plants and a floating island of more plants. It gets half a day of sunshine
and then is in the shade. I can see this from my treadmill :-)

Drama in Gnome Garden Country

The local nursery is holding a fairy garden contest again. The gnomes decided to add some drama to their entry this year. They managed to capture a fairy with a bait of bottled fairy glitter. We will not ask where they got the glitter. We have, however, demanded the fairy be released right after they staged their picture for their entry.
Or I will turn Gandalf loose on them....
