Warm and cozy wishes from the gnomes

May Santa bring you lots of beer!!!

PS - Kitty seems to have gotten bored with two days of tormenting the dogs. Hopefully back
home. Will still keep an eye out.

Abby's head has exploded. Again.

That window at the top of the blog. This kitty has been looking in the window and Abby's head keeps exploding. He/She has been around a couple days so today I offered it water and dog food (which was sniffed with disdain). Luckily the weather is mild (60 predicted today) and it has found a nice nest
in a protected corner with leaves. Will do the whole kitty dance around here if it is still around in a couple days. Luckily we donate to a no kill shelter. No collar, seems healthy and friendly.

UPDATE - kitty seems to have left. Nowhere to be seen. We hope he got bored teasing Abby and decided to go home to his own warm bed.

The Great Pig Escape

Read this with tutoring kiddos this week. About pigs who escape on their way to market as they don't want to become bacon, pork chops and ham.

BIL is a farmer and SIL keeps a huge vegetable garden. One year she put together an herb garden next to the pig pen. She watered the garden and she then gave the pigs a shower. They loved it and they loved her.

Come piggy harvest - after all these years on a farm - she had a really hard time with it. She moved the herb garden the next year.

You don't want to give her any more power...

Should dogs (and other domesticated animals) be granted citizenship?
Article here.
Abby is already cooking up plans. Forget democracy she will go for dictatorship.
All squirrels shall join the space program to be launched into space.
She will allow cats as she knows some of you actually like them.
But they must address her as 'Your Supreme Highness' at all times.

gnomeland security

The gnomes have updated their letter to Santa. They want one of these magnets to put on the metal front door to warn all that the gnomes are standing guard.
They are available at www.northernsun.com

The gnomes were informed

that, because of the younger family members, they needed a more appropriate Christmas picture. They made a gingerbread house for this picture and have asked Santa to bring more beer.

Nephew had a Rain Day

My nephews have never had a Snow Day - living in San Francisco all their lives but the youngest had a Rain Day yesterday.

My SIL's work lost power, Brother's did not. Power out all up the coast. 105 mph winds on Mt. Baker. It even went *around* us - shut down roads, closed schools and roads to the south and east of us. whew!

Pull tab to open....

Some of us, of a certain age, got to watch The Carol Burnett Show when it first ran. Loved every minute of it.
This time of year I always remember the 'pull tab to open' skit where Carol tries to open a soda and ends up trashing her entire kitchen.
Wrapping Christmas presents, getting this little or that little thing to do what I want it to, getting wrapping paper to stop trying to go back to its original configuration, losing the tape, the scissors, the tags. The family room looks like a paper storm hit it.
Thank you, Carol, for getting me thru the @$#% wrapping and mailing *fun*. Breathe deeply and pull tab to open....

my drive to school

This is facing the 'back home' way. We have a wonderful set of parks, with roadways, along the river. This is winter in our area for the most part, cold and foggy. Picture from the Chamber of Commerce.

Does anyone have a young nephew?

This is what the girls bought for a little boy they know.
The Engineer hopes it is out of production by the time we
have grandchildren.

We already have a fart blaster. His name is Tar.

Adventures in Thanksgiving - getting started already

This would be me - but I don't drink. I'd like to drink...

Anyway we have had our fair share of adventures - niece throwing up over the side of the bunk bed on top of her sister. Dogs drinking up all the fryer oil and doing the same in concert. The carrots that refused to cook. The parsnip pie.

So far, this year - Tar has eaten one of the candles that I have set aside to decorate the table. I caught him before he swallowed the metal bit.

I pre-made a turkey that came with just breasts only - poor thing bounced around life without wings and legs....

I made broth out of that turkey, simmered all day. Put it out on the 25 degree deck for 'free' cooling off. Forgot to bring it in. We had freezing rain all night. Pot stuck to the table....

So.... does your cat love you?

One of the books I've written for my 10 nieces and nephews is this one -
The other day I read it to the little girl I tutor. She liked it. :-)
She has a couple dogs and a cat. So I thought, in our final five minutes of each session, we could start taking notes about how her cat loves her and turn it into a book.
Now, being allergic to cats I don't know very much about them.
For fun I entered in 'how your cat loves you' into Amazon.
And the first book up was this ----

Okay, you cat people out there, I need input!

So where is the turkey hiding this year?

In his usual planter. It helps that the gnomes have moved inside since it is COLD here.
The gnomes are currently living on my kitchen windowsill.

oh, bother and CELEBRATION!

' new 14-module smart home kit makes your dumb coffee pot brilliant:

I have a paper calendar. I have dumb cell phone. I don't even use a coffee maker (french press).
I have a love/hate relationship with my burner-less stove. Someday I'm going to be trapped in my house as I won't be able to talk the front door into letting me out...

THAT SAID - celebration is due!!! Eldest is now employed by a Seattle start-up.
For people with smart phones....

Abby is displeased

A house in our subdivision has put up Christmas decorations.
All the stores have put up Christmas decorations.
Abby is worried they have forgotten Thanksgiving and the dogs'
tasty treat of turkey.
(Abby does not know about the tradition of knocking over the
cooling deep fryer of turkey goodness, lapping it all up and
barfing (three dogs' worth) at 2am....... but one of the cousin dogs
was in on the crime and he might tell them......)

Enjoying fall

One of our maples.
We are lucky to have large parks all along our rivers. The school I tutor at is in the next town which allows me to drive along the park and river and enjoy all the trees, water, squirrels and the kamikaze geese standing in the middle of the road.

A veterans' day story

Grandpa Willis Thirtyacre (last name was translated from the German Dreissigacker when the family immigrated) was a driver for a Colonel Weyrich during WW1. Like many immigrant families the children grew up with a combination of the language of the old country, in their case for both men German and English. Their language tended to get mixed up in times of stress.

One day Willis was driving the Colonel when they came under fire from German shells.
The Colonel, in his panic, lasped into German and yelled, "Gott in Himmel, Dreissigacker!! Schnell!!Schnell!!'
And they schnelled out of that area in a hurry.

Winter - it cometh

Got the bird water plugged in. Bird feeders full. Squirrel is tucked away in his big pine tree. Doggies are snug on *our* bed. Have lots of wood. Only time we lost power was when it was 19 below this
will be balmy so to speak. Stay warm and cozy the rest of you!

The mind. It boggles.

From our paper this morning --

"S Elementary School in R was among 54 elementary schools across Washington to be named a “School of Distinction” by the Center for Educational Excellence last month — a distinction that recognizes schools ranked in the top 5 percent for student performance improvements."

"S Elementary was among the area's schools this summer to send letters to parents stating the schools were failing after the state lost its waiver from the federal No Child Left Behind Act. The law requires consistent academic improvement until every student meets educational standards. The inability of any one group of students to meet those benchmarks labels a school, or even a district, as failing."

Abby is concerned about the new war on -

New senator promises to make them squeal...

She says it is only a matter of time. If you don't stand for pigs will you stand for dogs?

Abby is glad the midterms are over and promises to bite anyone who brings up 2016
at Thanksgiving.

Wade Heninger

Water.  It's important.

(This fellow is running, unopposed, to retain his seat for King Country (Seattle) Water District # 123

warning, she's on another education rant!

Boy, do I have an opinion about this article...  - "Teacher hiring should be more scientific."

"The National Commission on Teaching and America's Future estimates one-third of all new teachers leave after three years, and 46 percent leave within five years."

It talks about screening for teacher hiring. It should be 'screening for teacher education admission'.

About 3/4s of the way thru our masters in teaching course (you need a BA or BS in anything to apply) our instructor did an extrovert vs. introvert test. Most of the class ended up on the extrovert side. A few of us were on the introvert side. They should have tested for more. And earlier. My student teaching experience was a disaster and I've run into other people who had the same.

So before you spend $15,000 (my masters course) maybe the universities should screen some
more, really look, ask questions, help the future teacher reflect and explore. The 46 percent loss is telling you something.

(But - the money wasn't totally wasted - I am a good tutor. I've had teenagers, violent kids, sad kids, scared kids, mad bomber kids. Right now I have two adorable third graders with reading issues.)

This is a job - steeplejack

The Amercian flag flies over one of our bridges over the Columbia River.
Then it broke after about 10 years. How to fix it?
The state advertised and found a 'steeplejack' in CA who flew up and fixed it on
one of our windy days (the day before we recorded 64 mph just north of us)
Said it was 'just another day at the office' for him.

Found this article interesting

Teacher spends two days as a high school student and is shocked at what she learns.

I have tutored all ages of school kids.
Right now I'm blessed with two adorable third graders.

I agreed with all of this article.

Zombie politics in WA state

Well, why not?

— Zombies have become a political issue in a state Senate race in Spokane.
Incumbent Republican Sen. Michael Baumgartner is challenged by Democrat Rich Cowan, whose North by Northwest production company helped film "Z Nation" for the Syfy Channel in Spokane.
KXLY reports (http://bit.ly/1x8xxH3) Cowan touts the hundreds of jobs the TV show brought to the city. Baumgartner says the zombie jobs are temporary and created with a taxpayer subsidy.
Cowan says the second season of "Z Nation" will likely be produced in Spokane."

Barbie and Halloween

Going around the interwebz.

Barbie had a hard life around here. She was often found tied to a chair (I called those Barbie in Bondage) so Ken could rescue her. She was launched into space tied to a rocket. Her remains lived in a haunted dollhouse we had for many years. This definitely looks like something the tribe would have done had they thought of it.

Nephew-in-law writes a book!!

Available on Amazon in paperback or Kindle

Matt married #3 niece (birth order). Always have enjoyed his sense of humor, his love of basset hounds and his parenting of two of my bunch of 10 grand nieces and nephews.

The white thong underwear. Well, is kind of a family legend and leave the rest to your imagination. Unless you buy the book or kindle edition....  :-)
