teacher of the year!

From a tiny town just west of us. A science teacher who has worked wonders -

"His big push is for teachers to know their students. Really know them.
Apparently it's easier to inspire students when you have a positive relationship with them. And inspired kids challenge themselves."

Which echoes what one of my education profs said to us, "The three Rs are relationship, relationship, relationship."

Full story here.

Tar slurped up an entire cup of coffee

This is a dog. This is a dog on caffeine. This is going to be a long day...

It took 48 hours

and calling five different numbers multiple times, all over the world, to talk to the repairman that was here on Tuesday when the fridge stopped its temporary fix.

He to treat it like a computer and unplug it and plug it back in every time it stops working. So far, so good.

I finally reached the local store by looking up the company that owns our mall. It had the actual store's number. The store called the district manager and the repairman call me this morning.

duck update

One of my favorite garden centers has a pair of ducks that come back every year to nest. I saw them again by the water garden tank. The mama duck finally decided where to nest this year after touring several buildings. She picked the herb display. Parsley specifically.  She plucked at the sage to line the nest. The nursery waits until the eggs are laid and then they move the nest, with chosen plants, to a hanging plant container so they are safe from wandering raccoons in the night.

calling Sri Lanka

I feel like the fourth lab..... After much attempting to communicate with the service calling center, in some far away land, going thru the Menu From Hell, finally talking to a live person, wrestling with an accent I could barely understand, I have been promised a call back. Has not happened. So we will call again. Sob. And buy more ice. Maybe another cooler. MAYBE ANOTHER FRIDGE!

The fridge. It is not Lazarus.

$442.43 worth of fret, worry and lamentation the fridge was blessed to run a week by a really nice repairman whilst a part is to be put on a camel and sent forth with a return visit promised next Tuesday.

Two hours passed and Lazarus has returned to behind the rock. It stopped working again. More ice is being purchased by the Daughter. I spend a good 20 minutes talking in foreign tongues to a representative half way around the world. I am to stand by for choirs of angels to herald the next visit by the repairman.

This is an ex-fridge.

Our fridge has passed on. This fridge is no more. It has ceased to be. It's expired and gone to meet its maker. This is a late fridge. It's a stiff. Bereft of life, it rests in peace. It would be pushing up the daisies. It's rung down the curtain and joined the choir invisible. This is an ex-fridge.

And repairmens can't come until tomorrow.....

Tabasco Jelly Bellies -

are sooooo good! I've been looking for them since I heard they were making them. When my folks lived in Lousiana we went to New Iberia to their park (where an alligator had his eye on our labrador but that's another story...) I'm going to send some to the boys.

Saturday Morning Supervision Duties

Dad insists on mowing the yard. All our carefully hidden balls and sticks and other purloined loot is displaced!

I may be the smallest gosling but I'm the bravest -

None of my siblings were brave enough so I got this nice chunk of bread.

gnome sized lucky rock

As a kid I was told rocks with rings around them were lucky rocks. So guess who has a collection of lucky rocks? I found the little one, about the size of my little fingernail, in a bunch of rocks I was using for the gnome garden. So that is where it is going. Hidden in a gnome-y spot.

healthy vs sooo not healthy - avian fuds

Since the ducks and geese turned up their beaks at fruit we bought them 10 grain organic bread. (And endured rolling of the eyes of The Engineer and Eldest...)
But yesterday we came across a huge bunch of the above - mostly bright orange and about ten times the amount pictured. The ducks and geese were not interested but the seagulls were....  seagulls eat anything!

Mr. Rogers says it best

"When I was a boy and I would see scary thing in the news, my mother would say to me, "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.
To this day, especially in times of 'disaster', I remember my mother's words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers - so many caring people in this world."
- Mr. Rogers

And they will always greatly outnumber the kinds of people who perpetrate these kinds of disasters like the Boston Bombing.

waiting for more gnomes to arrive

Put in a pathway and a table to await more gnomes. Probably need a few beer steins to put on the table....

gnome sighting!

Today, after the UPS truck stopped by, a gnome was spotted in the wee garden! I think he brought a couple friends along.
Tomorrow we will work on the pond edging and visit a nursery that has wee plants.

high rise goose

Yesterday Daughter and I came across this goose nesting in a tree about 12 feet off the ground. Not sure how the little gooslings are going to get down from there....

update - picky, picky, picky

Ducks and geese turn up their beaks at halved grapes and strawberries. Seagulls loved them, but seagulls eat anything. The ducks and geese also wanted their peanuts shelled...

gourmet ducks

We have been feeding the ducks and geese at the park. I looked up healthy stuff to feed the resident avians and found, amongst other items, halved grapes. The Engineer helpfully and accidentally picked up seeded grapes at the store this weekend and ta-da! we are halving grapes this morning. Another handy items is thawed frozen peas.

TAR! and abby

GB took this picture when he was home this weekend. The world's biggest and smallest Labradors.

gnome pond stage one

First off I spray painted a glass bowl black.
Next cut out a circle for the edging.
I spray painted it an olive green and gathered flat rocks from the frontyard landscaping.
Next I will buy tiny pebbles and mosaic mortar in grey.
The plan is to mortar the rocks and tiny pebbles on the painted cardboard circle.
Since the gnome gardens sit under the eaves it should hold up...
I have put out an ad for gnomes to come live in the garden.

Trees for the gnomish folk

will get planted today or tomorrow - spring turned cold and rainy again. There will be a pond under
the bridge.

We are sooooo innocent. Really.

Recently my new glasses disappeared. After much searching the Labradors were charged with illegal appropriation and purloin-age of the glasses. It is not without precedent. Two pairs of The Engineer's sunglasses have been reduced to bits, GB's wallet was munchified and a one hundred dollar bill was very tasty. Just now, as I type this, I took an asthma rescue inhaler away from Tar.

With the arrival of a passel of college students going on a brewery tour here in SE WA I have been washing bedding. Today I found my glasses... in a nest of fuzzy blankets on my chair which I use to get thru the winter. Only I could have lost them there. The Labradors are INNOCENT.

Apologies have been offered. The extra $248 for new glasses will be taken off their ledger of doggy treats.... now I just have to figure out where Tar nabbed the inhaler...

Abby working on her tan

Spring arrived in SE WA. The dogs enjoyed the warmth.
