Top Chef goes on a boat to Alaska

They put the chefs on a luxury cruise ship to Alaska. Very swish! We used to make this trip all the time but in the above freighter. Since the freighter was relatively small it really used to roll from side to side when the ship went across the open ocean. It was great fun for us kids. We'd run up and down the passages inside bouncing from wall to wall.

Arid Snowman

With seven inches of moisture a year we do get some snow but not a lot of it. So you want to make a snowman? Find tumbleweeds. We have LOTS of those. Any land, not under irrigation, provides them. Two local, creative girls make a Tumbleweed Man.

Abby wonder if this would be useful...

against squirrels?
Seattle had a gun buy-back event.
And this Russian anti-tank grenade launcher showed up....
I told Abby she could not have it for squirrel control.

Mad Scientists

are getting kind of romantical. Dung beetles navigate using the moon and the stars.

Ban Cats?

Even Abby thinks this is too harsh. Article here.

Squirrel Appreciation Day. Really.

And Abby is shocked and dismayed and bereft. Tar says neat hat, dude.
"Just when you thought we had some down time between New Year's Eve and Valentine's Day, here's something worth putting on your Google calendar: on Monday, January 21, it's Squirrel Appreciation Day."
Very funny article here.

Science Heroes!

One of my favorite catalogs THINK GEEK has heroes of science t-shirts available. They asked us to vote for the next scientist to be t-shirted. I voted for Isaac Newton. I am almost finished writing a book for 10-yr-old nephew who is taking an online physics course. I'm combining Newton's various laws and inventions and Ralph the Squirrel (not to fear all science stuff double checked by The Engineer and  Eldest girlfriend C). Isaac Newton was just the kind of odd soul who mixes up nicely with a squirrel (at least in my hands he does!)
Abby has given her approval because she loves all the nieces and nephews.
Bookeman - wonderful, fun bookmaking site.

Mystery Squirrel

I was removing ornaments from the tree. (Honestly I have a good excuse for being this late!) And I found this squirrel. We do not own a squirrel ornament. The Squirrel has been our sworn enemy from the Heidi and Rosie days when they first showed up in our neighborhood. I have a feeling that a certain young man snuck the squirrel into the tree (it was at the very back) to be tricksy. Hmmm. I'm betting Eldest Son...

Off to California

Eldest and C are heading south to the Silicon Bay area. C has an internship and Eldest will be looking for a job. My brother and family live in SF so it will be fun for them. So nice to have them here and Abby's tail is now resting from uber-wagging.

doggy update

So Abby pooped her bed while under drugs (see post below for why she is on drugs). I cleaned her up and got her bed started on cleaning (scrape, hose down, in the wash) and fed the dogs. Tar bounded in the house and barfed all his kibbles on the floor. At this point I gave up and told The Engineer that snooze time is over. Barf is cleaned up. We found a wrapper from a peanutbutter cup and figured Tar ate that while Abby was at the ER vet. The Engineer starts his pancakes for assorted kids and Tar wanders by and snags a cube of butter. Yum! We expect to see it from one end or the other sometime today......UPDATE - butter came up, on the carpet of course.

Abby and her tail - again

New Year's Eve - and we're off to the ER vet as our vet is closed until Wednesday. Abby was acting the same way she did the last time she cracked her tail. Took an xray and she has just wrenched it this time. She is on drugs. She is very mellow. Vet detailed all the reasons that this happens and one of them is she was wagging her tail too much! With the boys home, some good friends dropping by, Eldest girlfriend staying here - that's a lot of loves to dispense. Thus we begin-th 2013. :-)
