This is how it should be

Made me smile this morning:

Local story: A Muslim exchange student lives with a Mormon family and attends a small private Catholic high school.

We hosted an exchange student when my brother was a senior in high school and I was at college. Jurgen, a relaxed  German charmer, who, along with my brother, ended up in a cast from skiiing and they both went to prom with leg casts on and juanty canes. And top hats and ungodly colored tuxes but such was male fashion in the 70s.

Birdy Update

After resting and recovering in the warm inside Birdy spotted Tar putting his very
large snozzle on the table to investigate

the birdy and went, "WHAT THE HELL?!?!?!"
Birdy was then ready to go outside and join the others at the bird feeder.

Birdy Recovery Ward

Birdy hit the window and didn't recover. So we brought it in, added water and seed and are
hoping he perks up. This is our state bird, a gold finch, so probably some law involved...

Happy Abby

Youngest Son back (without the beard) and Abby is back to being a lap dog. Kind of.
Eldest Son back on Saturday and her (and Tar's) pack will be complete.

Rant Alert

My debit card was stolen earlier this fall.
Someone tried to buy make-up in South Dakota.
Got it replaced.
Then one of our grocery stores had data and cards
stolen. My friend had to cancel and replace her card.
Then Target got 40 million stolen.
I have a receipt from the day before the theft happened.
I am getting tired of going thru receipts, checking
statements every day.
I'm thinking about going all cash for local purchases.
And not ordering over the internet for a while,

I'm officially declaring a Pinterest Fail

Note the not falling snow.
Trees end up as brown wire
Plastic jars, for kid safety, end up way too heavy

I tried everything. Tried waterproofing the trees. They lost their color and muddied the water. Gave up. Took the trees out. Tried real commercial snow. All floated to the top. Took snow out. Left no air. Tried different concentrations of glycerin and distilled water.  Tried all sorts of glitter. Glitter mixtures. Tried different jars. Leaked. Tried 'dry' globes. All the glitter went static and stuck to the sides. I perused the entire Pinterest collection of diy snow globes. Followed a lot of pins to their sites for hints. I have an entire shelf full of plastic and glass jars. A box full of glitter, snow, trees, snowmen and glues. It mocks me...

A Tar Problem

or things to make you laugh at 5am in the morning. Tar, in pursuit of a stray kibble, ends up stuck underneath the kitchen table and can't figure out how to get out.

water for the birds and The Squirrel

With the pond I've always had a source of open water for the birds and The Squirrel. A bubbler and/or small floating heater will always keep a part of the pond ice free.

Then Tar broke the pond.

I ordered a bird bath heater.
I will take it out of Tar's allowance.
22 degrees currently.

Every thing I need to know I learned on Mythbusters

I'm going to be making some snow globes. Here are six tests using different glitters and ratios of glycerine and distilled water.
UPDATE: Mythbusters needs to bust Pinterest....

Three women scientists, three new schools

Marie Curie
Rosalind Franklin
Barbara McClintock

We have three communities that are set on the river together. I have worked in all three school districts. I'm particularly pleased with this one this morning.

"Pacso's three new schools, designated to be focused on science and technology, will be named after female scientists.
The Pasco School Board selected the names -- Rosalind Franklin, Barbara McClintock and Marie Curie -- during a Tuesday meeting.
The names of the recommended female scientists have strong ties to science, though two of them have been largely forgotten by history. Rosalind Franklin was a British biophysicist whose work contributed to the study of DNA. Barbara McClintock was an American scientist who worked in genetics. Chemist and physicist Marie Curie is well known for her work in radioactivity."

A picture from Mars. Still stuns me that this is an 'everyday' event.
Picture from NASA via Curiosity the roaming robot.

The gnomes have fans!

A local garden center put this aside for the gnomes... The sign says 'Fairy Club   Gnomes not allowed!'
Note the fairy has lost its head....  I wonder if the gnomes are slated for coal in their stockings this year?
