morning sunflower

I always buy all sorts of sunflower seeds and the birds plant the rest. Loves this color.

the gnomes sayeth, the dogs' mother obeys

First the liner and then the pebbles.
Next year I might add a pump to circulate the water (unless someone talks some sense into me).
(Note the gnome beer garden table where they direct the labor.)

more healthy goose food...

We tried sprouting seeds at home.
We were a dismal failure at it.
So we bought sprouted wheat grass.
The geese turned up their beaks at it.
We left it at the park and noticed one
goose starting to work on it so maybe
they will get a healthy meal yet.

annual craziness

And it has nothing to do with us!
Hydro-plane races down on the river.
Sounds like a million angry bees from our house.

here we go again -

This is all about Halloween. It needs a large piece of real estate. For most of the year it will be a habitat for the squirrels. Then October 1st it will turn into Halloween! The gnomes have plans.

the $35 venus flytrap

It started out as an impulse purchase. $7.99 in our fight against flies.
Then we got home and looked up care of such plants.
We need special mail order dirt to plant it in its special clay pot and a bag of tiny rocks so it has adequate drainage but still stay humid so a plate needed to go underneath and has to be outside for four hours of strong sunshine a day AND it needs distilled water at $1.39 a jug...
Now it better get busy catching flies before they fly into the house.

birthday candles make good tiki torches

The twins are 28! One of them, Eldest Son, is in San Jose, and Daughter is here in town. So we had birthday candles which somehow made it out to the gnome garden and became tiki torches.

Abby and the gnomes are on the same page

Found these squirrels rounded up and imprisoned. They are going to need their own garden. Off to buy plants today and a bigger container...

Tar learns about jalapeno peppers - again

Saw him attempting to chew up the pepper, spit it out, and try again. We've done this experiment before. Last summer.

Did the gnomes move indoors? Are they Harry Potter fans?

I think  the gnomes may attempt to move in for the winter. And extra stuff (that would not work outside) began arriving by the UPS truck. The stuff needed a home and a theme developed...

The contest....the consolation prize

So the gnomes did not win the fairy garden contest held by a local nursery. They are drowning their sorrows. (That is real beer poured by an eye dropper.)

CSI Gnome

Found this ax hidden in the gnome garden. Am wondering if it has anything to do with the skeleton sleeping with the tadpoles...

It is time for drastic measures!

We've got wasps living in the juncture of the railing to the staircase rail. We tried live and let live but some family members are getting worried about them. So we bought *two* of these fake hives that were supposed to scare them off. A territorial thing.
Didn't work. Wasps laughed at the fake hives. Then we tried the Last Meal approach - cheap hot dogs, cheap beer and a last leisurely swim in the hanging trap. Worked pretty good.
Until tonight, while going down the stairs, I got a hell of a sting. They seemed to be swarming. Abby and Tar were trying to catch them out of the air. THAT'S IT! I knew The Engineer had some Raid squirreled away someplace. (I hate pesticides - but I've had it with these things!!) So out came the Raid.
Closed the deck to the dogs for the evening. Tar is inside now trying to catch flies.

the gnomes have a visitor

Rumor has it he dropped in for some beer.
When asked to be taken to their leader the gnomes pointed out Abby.

The War on Insects!

Wasp trap full of pesky wasps

Fly trap *not* full of pesky flies

We are plagued with wasps nesting in the deck railing - they fly in at the juncture of the stair railing and the main railing. We bought decoys wasp hives (supposedly they see it and flee - HA!). I won't use pesticides and I would not let The Engineer wall them inside their nest to starve to death. So I gave them the final meal option of tasty hot dogs, a hearty alcoholic haze with beer and a swim.  And it is working.

Inside the stupid flies turn up their collective noses at hot dogs, beer, honey, raw hamburger - nothing entices them into the trap.

Tar is doing his best to catch them. But a 125 lb. goofy Labrador leaping around the house brings its own dangers...

Thankfully the gnomes realize that getting into the wasps' beer would be inadvisable.

gnomes may have too much beer

when they got into the beer bait trap for earwigs. Spotted evidence of them having coffee...

gnomes in pursuit of beer

In an attempt to make a dent in a population of earwigs I set out a saucer of beer.
Guess who showed up?

the first sunflower

Temps have gone back to normal. All is right with the deck garden.

this how we celebrate the 4th of July

- we set off illegal fireworks and set things on fire. This is just west of where we live. Two more big fires of this size. Tonight is the last day they can set off legal fireworks (and idiots can set off illegal fireworks).

the gnomes start a blog

the gnome gardens
Mostly stuff posted here will be duplicated over there. Some more detail on how to build a gnome pond and care of feeding of a Loch Ness Monster. That kind of thing. And beer.

Abby's Worst Nightmare

Thousdands of flamingos around the shoreline of Lake Bogoria in Kenya.

Happy Canada Day, eh?

Brother and I were born and raised for 13 years in Canada with American parents. We are dual citizens. Each country has its advantages and disadvantages and we loves them both. Now I've got to go grab my Canadian flag and set it up on the porch.
