Only this time the troops are squabbling amongst themselves.

the battle has been joined!

Three farm geese on their way to do battle with three Canadian geese. Mostly this involves a lot of honking but dramatic none the less.

Most wonderfulness teenager - and smart

What kids eat for school lunch has always been an issue. When I was a wee child we had monitors who would prowl the tables and snap at us, 'Eat your green beans!!' I hated them then. I hate them now. I learned to stuff them in my empty milk container.

Now new guidelines mandate that certain things must be placed on the lunch tray. Kids toss them into the garbage. Ashley Croney, age 14, and an eighth grader decided that this food can be donated and she did the long and hard work to make it happen. The food goes to the needy.

What a simple and brilliant idea.
The whole article is here and a good blueprint for someone wanting to do the same.

This cracked me up this morning.
From Twitter @Elise_Andrew.
Does it count that I once let a spider live under my delete key.
And typed very carefully as he did not like typos...

We are blessed to have several dozen miles of walks along the Columbia River. That is Rattlesnake Mountain in the distance and, yes, The Engineer has run across several of the species out there, the principal at school ran across one in the doorway of the second grade classroom and my girlfriend's son brought home a baby ratttlesnake he found on one of his rambles (can I keep it, Mom?...)

Little Catholic church in the wilderness

There were three churches in our tiny village of 900 souls.

The Anglican, the United Church of Canada (Methodist) and the Catholic church. The town, perched on a mountain side with wooden roads, was only accessible by boat or seaplane. And hours away from the nearest settlement. My dad, as mill manager, was in charge of the entire thing.

One of the things that worried him was fire and for good reason - an unknown fire bug had recently set a fire in the mill and on a fishing boat.

Catholic priest Father Farrell loved candle lit trees for Christmas Mass. My dad was understandably concerned and had several worried conversations with him. We went to that year's Midnight Mass and I found the tree to be magical. Father Farrell joked that if the tree caught fire he would jump into it and take his chances with God rather than face the wrath of my father. But the tree did not catch fire and all was well.......

Until two nights later the fire bug set fire to the high school and the elementary school, burning down both buildings and five houses...

In my many varied career I have worked as a graphic artist for several publications including our hometown newspaper. I can totally see this happening when blocking out the newspaper for the day.  :-)
