cookie, cookie, cookie, cookie, Tar scored a cookie

He was so excited that all I could get was a blur. The girls are taking these cookies to a gaming convention. That's R2D2, Darth Vader and a 'pinata' cookie. The house smelled really good. We were all on Cookie Alert as Tar can reach anything and even Abby tried to steal one.

vacation on PNW beaches & clean up tsunami debris!

Realities of the west coast right now. And inland which is a surprise.

"It's not just for ocean beaches anymore.
"This stuff's coming into rivers now," says Mike Caldwell, Deputy Director of the Oregon Military Department.
"Tsunami debris is getting washed up the rivers with the high tides.
A concern, because some items found in the Columbia River near Astoria have had invasive species on them.
Caldwell says in Oregon, the cost of dealing with the tsunami debris has nearly reached $500,000. Oregon and Washington have each received $50,000 in federal clean-up aid."

Project Runway collection

Blogging Project Runway has Lord and Taylor's collection of dresses made by famous Project Runway alums. Most are variations of a black dress. There are a couple of standouts - Nick Verreos, Gordana Gehlhausen. And then this dress by Chris March which made me smile (and reminded me of my grandmother's lounging gowns...)
No wonder the previews show people cracking up. The kind of behind the scenes info I would like, and rarely get, is any instructions on how the dress is going to be produced. I can see Elena's seam upon seam upon seam not working for Chinese sewers - noting how simple and clean all the designs are.

Dear Lifetime, is all publicity good publicity?

Ven's model gets revenge. ruh-oh!
Blogging Project Runway has the scoop.
I think Lifetime has a lot to answer for - the challenge is always a disaster. They could have edited it a whole lot better. The continued bashing of Ven makes me uncomfortable. Maybe he really is that clueless. But Lifetime should have been kinder when confronted with the situation. It is not as if it hasn't happened before.

The sunflower that got away from Abby

Because I picked up the pot and moved it. This is the fourth attempt at blooming, as Abby snapped off all the others, and this time we have success! Of course both of them are totally innocent of any garden crimes.

Tar supports a free press

as it gives him a job. The Engineer hands him the paper every morning, at 5.40am, and he brings it to mom. Slightly damp with enthusiasm.

Taylor Bridge is still not out but should be by Wednesday.

halp! canal man 2

Deer came ashore at the canal outlet. They sprayed some water at it to get it to go back out and swim around to the shore.

Abby's master comes calling -

Starting at 3am with thunderous roars. Abby has been outside communicating and reporting to her master in her favorite spot as she surveys her territory.

a purloined jalapeno pepper

After suffering several purloined tomatoes I moved them behind the jalapeno peppers. A pepper suffered attempted purloining but didn't get past the first taste.  I think I may be ahead of the animals at this point.

halp! Mr. Canal Man

Lots of irrigation canals in our area. Cars, motorcycles and people consuming too much alcohol end up in them. This is the first llama.

yes, I did, I've got a new haunted house...

Halloween. I love it when the catalogs start putting in Halloween stuff. Thus start-eth the season for me. Now I've downsided from the full size coffin and guillotine and graveyard since the kids went off to college. Now I have a haunted fairy garden. I've just updated my haunted house. This one is from Yankee Candles. It has six candle placements so it lights up even better than my old house. Ordered it today. :-)

I love Colin Cotterill

After finishing the latest in his series starring Dr. Siri, Laotian coroner in 70s Laos, I went on to his new second series set in present day Thailand.

Killed at the Whim of a Hat "Jimm Juree was a crime reporter for the Chiang Mai Daily Mail with a somewhat eccentric family—a mother who might be drifting mentally; a grandfather—a retired cop—who rarely talks; a younger brother obsessed with body-building, and a transgendered, former beauty pageant queen, former older brother. When Jimm is forced to follow her family to a rural village on the coast of Southern Thailand, she’s convinced her career—maybe her life—is over."

Each chapter begins with a quote from George Bush the Younger - a Bushism. One of which contains the phrase 'killed at the whim of a hat'. Oddest literary device I've ever seen but makes sense later in the book.

I'm reading Grandad there's a Head on the Beach which has an equally hilarious chapter heading trick.

I love, love, love these books and I'm out after I finish this one until Mr. Cotterill releases another book.

Dear News Media,

It is a weird name.
Cle Elum is pronounced Clee El-um.
Anyone can mess that up.
But really, Cle Elum is NOT SW of Seattle.
It is SE.
Google Maps is your friend.

wind turbines, I-90 and from the air

Glad Tug isn't anywhere near WA right now. That's I90 which is the main east/west route thru the middle of the state. The second picture is from a commercial airline passenger, the fire behind Mt. Rainier.
At 7pm PST they say it is 10% contained.

another day, another fire

This is the Taylor Bridge fire in the middle of the state, right along I-90, 27,000 acres and 40 square miles involved at this point.

it's raining ash

Three wildfires in our area yesterday. It was raining ash in Abby's backyard last night and the whole place smelled like a campfire. Two big fires north of us. Summer in the west.

Technology doesn't always work...

Back from trip to Medford - by the grace of God...
Forget texting - trying to argue with the map app and Siri
on the iPhone will probably kill more people - especially
when yelling at it and trying to reprogram it while driving!!
"What do you mean left hand turn?! There is NO left turn!
Piece of *&#%@!!!"
Outside of Medford Siri decided we were driving into the wilderness full
of Zombies, showed no roads at all - just us wandering in a
featureless screen so it tried to reroute us to Crater Lake. Not
planning to go there this trip, Siri, take us back to Zombie Land.
Finally The Engineer, through gritted teeth, requested the paper map out
of the glove compartment - Luddites the world over rejoiced.
When we finally got to Bend we asked for a Denny's - Siri took us
thru a tour of several tiny back residential streets and delivered us
to a Jack in the Box. By then I was laughing so hard The Engineer
had to pass Siri to the back seat for Daughter to wrestle with.
I'm positive Siri had decided to deliver the van to a chop
shop and sell us into white slavery.

haunted garden & morning doofus

A ghost has moved into my fairy garden house.  There is a corpse of a damselfly in the web.

If mom is taking pictures then I need my picture took. See I'm smiling here. I'm always smiling. That's how we doofus-s roll.

All in a day's work - seagull rescue

Trooper saves injured seagull from middle of freeway

Trooper Bart Maupin holds an injured seagull he helped rescue from I-5. (Washington State Patrol photo)
BLAINE, Wash. -- An injured seagull trapped in the middle of a busy freeway was saved by a Washington State Patrol trooper, then got to go along for a ride as the trooper tried to catch a bad guy.

Maupin was able to get the seagull into the backseat of his patrol car and was taking the injured bird to the Northwest Wildlife rehabilitation center in Deming, all the while warning the seagull that next time, it'd be best to try to make it to the shoulder or tree branch to await assistance.

However, the seagull got an impromptu ride along as while they were en route, Maupin got called to assist another trooper who had a pulled-over driver run from him.

Abby and Tar surveying the damage

Before there was Tar and Abby - there was Gracie (and Sarge and Pongo and Heidi and Rosie).
This used to be four raised beds set up for a vegetable garden. It had a picket fence around it with a gate. It was the scene of a long pitched battle between me and Gracie, the beagle. Grace wanted into the garden in the worst way. It was in her territory and needed to be patrolled. She tried digging in and she tried chewing in. No go. When GB learned to walk and negotiate the backyard Gracie gained an ally. So a locking mechanism was put on the gate. This is when we learned that no child proof device worked with GB. So a lock with a key was added. Then the Engineer made the mistake of showing GB tools. It was all over. One day The Engineer turned his back and GB and Gracie grabbed the saw and broke into the garden. Being the mother of GB was more than a full time job. His adventures were legion. So the garden eventually filled up with weed trees that we finally cleared this week.

Dear Neighbors, we are sorry!

We really do have wonderful neighbors. This is the second time we've had to remove aspens. DO NOT PLANT ASPENS. Or at least around here. These little bugs get in and kill them. Abby is beside herself.

Another thing for Abby to supervise -

Crop circles north of here.
I used to drive through this area when my parents lived in northern WA.
