Critter Alert!!

I like to bring in hornwort from the pond. Critters come in for a spell. This is a damselfly nymph. They are the more delicate dragonfly type bugs. They are fierce predators during their time in water feeding on other insect larva, tadpoles and tiny fish. They, and the dragonfly nymphs, crawl out on plant stems and leave their outer skeletons behind.

Renovation Day One - The Early Years

Since the air conditioning was turned off all day (85% dark chocolate melted in the cupboard!) Abby needed to catch up by hogging the floor vent.
Laundry room migrated to the family room.
The floor in the upstairs bathroom is gone, the toilet is in the tub, the vanity in the hallway. This is so much fun.

I haz updates

Renovation work starts tomorrow. 7.30am. Eldest arriving to record his bass part on a song the band did years ago but is being recorded now by the drummer. It is being mixed up from all corners of the country - lead guitar in LA, singer in NYC. Daughter getting over summer cold. GB blowing away his supervisors with his internship (this is the gift of dyslexia). Tar chasing moths. Abby hunting Lady Bullfrog.

She can't stay in there forever!!

Abby has spotted the bullfrog. She is still out there, monitoring the situation. I swear, if the bullfrog jumps Abby will jump too. Tar is in the house at my feet. Dude has his priorities.
UPDATE: Abby fell in the pond, she had to come into the house to shake.

On Patrol hunting Lady Bullfrog

The puppies have figured out that Lady Bullfrog spends her days sunning in the pond. This requires much time spent on alert beside the pond. This is Tar. The white spot on his tail is of unknown origin. Abby has the same spot. Did they have a litter mate who chewed the other puppies tails? Was it a birth injury? It does seem to be getting more pronounced. But doubtful it will be any problem. Abby set her tail on fire and is none the worse for wear.
The green stuff at the surface of the pond is hornwort. It provides cover for the fish and also helps filter the water. It grows like nobody's business and was started from a few strands I found down by the river. It is a noxious waterweed in anyone's state. Did not know this when I invited it into our pond. At least we are a relatively closed system.

The river of time is flooding!!!

As The Engineer explains it your alarm clock is going to betray you! They are tinkering with the power grid delivery and clocks attached to the wall, or coffee maker, or stove, or microwave may go bonkers on you. Run too fast and compound that error. Your phone and computer will be okay timewise. Those areas of the country which rely on solar and wind might have more problems. The problem is probably going to be worse out West.
The article is here.

Project Runway WTH?! spoiler and picture

I'm not sure why but I can't get the picture to post below the text. They filmed one of the episodes in NYC today. Eight contestants left at this point. I really, really don't get the challenge. WHY? If those girls are their regular models - what a risk! Walking on stilts with lots of fabric wrapping around your legs?? Did they hire circus performers? What is the point of this? Where is the fashion? Some of them look like clowns and some of them look like a ladies who lunch. Here is an article about it all, also features who the guest judge is for this episode.

Update on HRH The Lady Bullfrog

Puppies and I sneaked up on the pond today and saw Lady Bullfrog sunning herself on a rock. She waited a bit before she decided to leap in the pond. As far as I can tell, she seems undamaged. I'll keep sneaking up on the pond and try and spot her this weekend. Tonight we'll keep an eye on the puppies during doggy duty times and hopefully we won't have another drama.

Bullfrog Drama

Bullfrogs leave ponds at night and hunt for mice and snakes and voles and shrews and other creatures of the night. The old lady labradors never bothered frogs or turtles they found in the yard. Puppies are a different matter.
Tonight Abby, then Tar, found the HRH The Lady Bullfrog in the old fashioned rosebush border. We didn't know what they had found until we saw the frog make a break for it. The Engineer ran down the stairs and shooed the dogs away as the bullfrog started crying!!!!
OMG! It was awful!!! She finally jumped in the pond and was safe. I'll check tomorrow to see how she is doing. Catching a bullfrog to present it to our vet for treatment would be an adventure. Hopefully she was just scared and not injured.
btw- that is her in the banner picture. I don't think I'm going to sleep very well tonight....

Tar has become Art!

I posted a picture of Tar in his chair a whiles back. Somewhere. Anyway one of my friends turned it into a pastel piece of art! It is now on the wall. Above Tar's chair. Isn't she amazingly talented?! :-)

For Father's Day The Engineer did *not* get bit by

the rattlesnake whose den he stumbled across while hiking. And that's a good thing!

In a Martha Stewart/Happy Hannah Homemaker moment

I decide to make my own vanilla extract. You order these beans and bottle, fill with rum, vodka or brandy. GB supplied the rum and vodka and the told The Engineer to go buy me some brandy. What?! I've been able to purchase booze since long before he was born! But, then again, he knows me well, I don't even know where the liquor stores are... (in this state you buys your booze in a state run store).

So I was slicing beans, two different ways, filling the bottles with booze, spilling it everywhere, getting it all over my hands and then I remembered.... Restoration Man is coming by this morning to pick up a flooring sample and he's going to see me as the drunken housewife at 9 in the morning. AK! I've been cleaning and scrubbing, maybe I should gargle with Free-breeze?

You can buy this stuff at Chinaberry.com along with great kids books and fun odds and sods.

Oh.My.Gawd!! It's a Chihuahua!!!

This Chihuahua fellow came with the workers next door.

This was a cause for much concern at our house. Puppies raced back and forth from the deck to our bedroom to keep an eye on The Dreaded Chihuahua.

Note the giant ice cube in the water

No slice of lemon though....

6.35am and The Enemy has been sighted!

Cat next door. We are in grave danger! We are also good dogs as we did not bark lest we get arrested/fined by some sad soul in the subdivision.

Abby warns The Engineer has the Flame Thrower!

Notice the brown edges for the front two barrels of creeping jenny. He has been banned from using it by my barrels for the rest of the summer!

more flooding

On the big river, the Columbia. Across the river is us, somewheres.

Another Invader!

Abby was out on the deck and gave a single bark and growl. This egret was standing on the shed roof. He was checking out the fish in our pond. He's come back and Abby sounded the alarm again. He waits until I come out on the deck and then he flies away. Tar leaves the bird patrol to Abby.

Summer planting for the summer we might have...

My little deck garden plot. I have some barrels down in the yard but they are recovering from a close encounter with The Engineer and his flame thrower (his version of weed whacking). There are two water plants in there, third pot from the left (dwarf papyrus) and behind the pale green pot (can't remember what it is...). Vine on the right, tomato and pepper in the second pot. Who knows how they will do. I just stick stuff in. My master gardener friend gave up on me decades ago!!

I Gots Me A Truck!!

That's me in the back and my brother Tar on the street. I owns this truck!! Let's Roll. :-)

Once Again I Nose Things

The Engineer is buying me a pick up truck today. Used. But still I hear all the cool labradors ride around in the back of a pick up truck. Mom says securely attached which means I won't be able to jump out at random squirrels and cats. And only at slow speeds - she's really trying to cramp my style.
