All Stars Top Chef Finale!

Interesting that Tom talked about a chef being a leader, not just a great cook. Hmmm, what was I saying last week?? I ranted on David's and Shamy's blogs about how the top chef needs to have so many more qualities than just making good food.
So did the right chef win? Over the whole season?
I'm okay with the winner.
And I'm very happy with who won fan favorite!

New supply of minions for Abby

Millions of mummified puppies found.

After reading the article I'm sure even Abby finds this sad and disturbing.
Looks like she'll have to stick with her current supply of minions.

Not as scary as @BronxZoosCobra....

but along the same principle. I put this little terrarium together over a year ago. Tonight I was at the kitchen sink and saw a worm wiggling by. EEEEKKKKK!!!! Glad I'm not in NYC to be stalked by the @BronxZoosCobra!

Brad Parks - new author alert

Our hero is a newspaper reporter in New Jersey. My favorite kind of dogged protagonist written with humor and interest -meaning I learn new things from the books. Two in the series and I hope many more. Author is a former newspaper reporter. Really enjoyed these books.

They. Are. Coming...

Anyone read The White Mountains as a kid? Sacred the heck out of my younger self. Whenever I see these around Oregon and Washington it still brings back that book.

I'm just never going to fit in my chair again, am I?

Maybe if we cut back on his puppy kibble?

car made us laugh

Smart car with personalized license plate that reads IR SMRT. The phrase around the license plate holder says, 'my other car is stoopid'.

Bravo and Top Chef takes pimpage to a whole new level!!

(Three guesses where I stole the illustration. Actually you will probably only need one guess. Forgive me, but it showed up right away while googling 'pimp top chef'. Credit due to Shamu at http://thekarmickitchen.blogspot.com/)

"On March 30, Bravo will host simultaneous upfront events for buyers in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, all of which will be attended by the network's various celebrities. Bravo will in turn show scenes from the upfront events live during its broadcast of the finale of "Top Chef All-Stars," using the promo time that aims to keep consumers around during commercial breaks.

Bravo breathlessly says -- with a lot of hype, mind you -- that "this unprecedented initiative will -- for the very first time -- allow home viewers a glimpse into this 'invitation only' advertising soiree," which will appear on screen during the network's promo time."

It's war!

Abby and The Squirrel have declared war. She no longer responds to the squeaky and the treat method of getting her to stop barking her idiot head off. She no longer responds to Mr. Squirt Bottle (Squirt Bazooka?). She no longer responds to the sonic sound birdhouse we bought for $55. Now you have to drag her back into the house and be accused of high treason as The Squirrel is Still In Our Tree!! The leaves don't come back on the trees here until the end of April. The Squirrel and I think it isn't soon enough.

Not sure what kind of doggy face this is?

Tar looking at GB and getting his picture took.

we're a dot on a map!

I'm geeky about this - the big scientific research community we have here. This map is a result of a study of the most science-y cities in the world. Green is good. Red is bad. Moscow is the big red dot. We're a green dot in the PNW. The article is here.

David Dust Grocery Shopping Mission

David posted a link to the New York Post's annual grocery trip. So many items and how much they cost this year.
Being a good Dust Bunny I checked at our store, with the help of The Engineer. We decided to look at the cheaper end of things - regular hamburger instead of organic, regular eggs instead of happy, free range eggs. Frozen prepared food, just looked for something comparable as they didn't list a particular brand/size. We didn't look at sale items. My perfect table did not post-fer so hopefully this will be easy to read.

ITEM/ MANHATTAN/ SE WA state
1 dozen eggs / $2.62/ 1.59
6oz chunk light tuna / 2.42/ 1.25
1lb pork sausage / 5.36/ 3.49
160z frozen corn/ 2.59/ 2.29
tbone per lb/ 15.99/ 11.63
1/2 gal milk/ 2.52/ 1.59
1/2 gal OJ/ 5.32/ 3.29
frozen prepared dish / 4.92/ 4.29
iceberg lettuce/ 3.32/ 1.99
1lb ground beef/ 4.82/ 3.19

TOTAL/ $59.85/ $34.60

The drugs wore off - puppy fashion statement

Someone suggested tshirts instead of the cones of shame (which are painful after they bump into you time after time after time). They work pretty well. You have to gather up their 'skirts' with a rubber band when they go outside. Abby's shirt says 'Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally' - extra points to the first one to know this phrase.

Note of concern - at 8 months of age, Tar now weighs 101 lbs.

The Return of the Cones of Shame

Abby

Tar

Part Three of The Saga of Responsible Pet Ownership.
The removal of the NOT dissolving stitches has been accomplished and it is back to the Cone of Shame for both of them. This adventure in veterinary consumerism is now into four figures.

more fun at the vet

Abby is back in and having surgery again - another spot opened up - where they didn't think they'd have to remove the non-dissolving dissolving stitches. Maybe they don't understand Demon Power.

And Tar now has an open wound and we can see the stitch being expelled. He goes in at 9am. Tar is looking forward to legal stoner-ism.

It's the Top Chefs - we're doooooomed!

I always wonder about the behind the scenes stuff. Did they have anyone out looking for sharks? Is the white garb traditional? Did they have a plan for rain? How many conch did they salt around the little bay? Is Mike's head going to explode? Is Richard going to get therapy?

Abby attempts to combine elegant and utilitarian

While on guard duty this morning.

This is a dog. This is a dog on drugs.

Abby is back home and feeling no pain.
One of the techs at the vet said her lab had to have three of these procedures
to remove stitches that won't dissolve. AK!!

Abby at the vets - more surgery

Noticed an opening on her incision from her spay operation a couple months ago!
Got her into our wonderful vet right away.
Turns out she would not let her internal stitches dissolve (well, what Demon would?) and she is attempting to expel them from her body.
She is having some surgery to pull them out, will be stitched up with something Demon Proof (does anything like that exist?).
Didn't someone here in blogger land have an animal that didn't do well with stitches?

Abby learns that Demon Power can't accomplish everything

Abby's new enemy

A doggy's work is never done.
Every year a kingfisher visits the pond, dives in and steals some of my fish. Such is nature.
All the other dogs ignored the bird.
Not Abby.
Just inside (after reading the squirrel the riot act) and slightly soggy from the rain, the kingfisher arrives with his loud call, and Abby is out the door again.
The bird is not happy and chatters at her. Abby, with Minion Tar in tow, gives it right back.
Tar comes in to dry off. Abby is still on patrol.

Saturday, March 12, 2011

I nose things....

Tar does. He nose things. Important things. Like kibbles and dirty socks.

Top Chef Finale part one

Oh, noooooooes! Sob. Was hard to see this particular chef go home.

Earlier in the evening we got all carried away and tried risotto. From a box. Yes, we are that sophisticated around here.... We liked it. Next we will try it from scratch. In the other pan is garlic, onions, broccoli and left over chicken from last night.

Next week - chefs go diving!

Just how many ways does a body need to be hooked up?

Youngest son, the computer genius in waiting, with two laptops and a smart phone. He isn't frying all my future grandchildren is he?

Somebody is in the driveway!!

THE ENEMY

Worst than CatZilla.
The Squirrel!

circumventing the smart phone - Tar

My phone is not *smart* at this time. We've already got three smart phones in the family and that is co$tly enough. And there is no way to get pictures out of my phone to my computer unless....... I send them GB, he sends them to DropBox, I send them to Pixelmator (a MacBook app) and then import them for the web... Are you following all that? So here is Tarfus on the bed, his favorite spot, behind me, to monitor my deskwork and the remodeling project across the street and the kids going to, and from, school and the neighbor kids playing basketball.

Middle of the Night Musings 2 1/2 Men

I've never seen Two and a Half Men. Had a vague idea it was about two men and a boy. Now that CharlieS. has gone into low Earth orbit I wondered about the boy. Would you want your child around this man? When they canceled the rest of the season I thought, for everyone's safety, it was a good thing, especially the child actor. You don't want him thinking CharlieS's behavior is, in any way, glamorous.

Tonight I ran across re-runs on another channel and clicked onto an episode. CharlieS's character is CharlieS! - no wonder he does such a good job. The episode had the boy walking into a room where CharlieS is atop a woman wearing sexy, black underwear, CharlieS talks about drug use in Bangkok and having sex with two women, the group walks in on Grandma having sex with a man she met that day. Ewwww (which brings up another subject - automatic disgust at elder people and any sexuality - wth?). All that in one week of shooting just one show.

I looked up the actor. He looks much younger than his age at the moment, 17. He has spent eight years with this show and, so far, has not gone off the rails in a Brittney/Lindsay/Christina wagon. Best of luck to him. Hollywood is very hard on kids.

Our very own Volcano Cam

All is quiet and that is good. Mt. St. Helens.

The project

Hopefully this will protect the rather large investment we made in these two trees. Puppies, so far, can not dislodge the big stones and digging in the sand is no biggy. They need better hobbies.

CSI - doggy crimes

No sooner than we got the stone around the trees and the sand neatly placed than the puppies managed to dig four holes like the one above. Never saw them do it.
But they still can't damage the tree's roots so we'll call it a draw.

This weekend's project

Behind the puppies are the two trees we planted a couple months ago. The puppies love to dig around in that area. The poles and the trees are at risk! For just $250 we now have a bunch of sand and flat rocks to put around the trees. We have a handy dandy 21-yr-old for labor. We have health insurance for The Engineer! We can do this!

I haz a phone

A new phone. It is supposed to be *EASY*. It has not been set up to be a smart phone at this time and won't be unless I have to spend a significant time out of the house. Right now the project is how to get the picture I took of Tar, out of the phone and onto the computer. I have GB's next available appointment. I will withhold pizza until we figure this out.

It has started...

Raccoons have thrived in the modern world. Their population has increased since the colonization of America.

And now they are making their move.

In the nation's capital!

There's a family of raccoons chasing passengers as they enter and exit one of the subway stations in northeast D.C.

How long will take Richard to show up with this?

Top Chef All Stars

Another Top Chef first! Are you happy with the outcome? And the previews - fire trucks?!

My family is German/English and we ate North American 60s cuisine. I remember Kraft Mac and Cheese with peas and tuna fish. Scrambled eggs with crumbled bacon.

When I married The Engineer (Swedish) I inherited the ebelskiver pan and my MIL's hand written recipe and this has become a family tradition served the morning after Thanksgiving - made by The Engineer. Each nephew-in-law gets a pan and recipe upon marriage. So a tradition with a twist.

(Yes, those are some of the ancestors above.)
