Project Runway - the 70s. Again

Graduated high school in 1974 and college in 1978. Yes. I had hot pants. And a maxi skirt. And platform shoes. And all manner of polyester. I'd find pictures for you but the basement is still torn up.
The winner we pegged from the first. The aufee we were shocked!

Just Desserts - yuk

The quickfire used root vegetables and the chefs did pretty good. I made parsnip pie once. It was pretty awful but there you are.
The elimination challenge was just some rock band dude pantry items - like chicken, pizza and pork and beans... It was kind of yukky. And one of my favorite chefs went home.

A sincere pumpkin

When GB and I saw its stem we knew it belonged with us.

Eldest Adventures and explosions

You may have heard of a house explosion in Seattle. A block from Eldest apartment. Happened around dawn. Eldest text-ed that he was not home at the time, roomie said it rattled the apartment. A wise mother does not ask why Eldest was not home around 6am.

Chris March and....

Lady Gaga.
It was bound to happen sooner or later.
Chris' new show on Bravo premieres October 4.
Also something that was destined to happen.

this just geeks me out - from my Twitter feed

It's possible that is down by now. (Everybody OK out there?) We're waiting for confirmation from US Strategic Command.

Update: ..........crickets. Nobody is saying anything. Nobody knows where the thing landed!

12 hours later

We're standing by for location updates from the U.S. Joint Space Operations Center. No reports of any damage or injury.

and then this

Dead satellite likely fell into Pacific Ocean--maybe

beautiful day in SE Washington - could be our last one

Hot air balloon rally on the Yakima River.
The satellite is back heading to North America.

Project Runway - the rocker challenge

I liked the boys in the band - but I have a soft spot for boys in the band. That is Eldest in a woman's orange leisure suit (he was 5'11' and 140 lbs at the time). He also had a powder blue one...

Olivier. If anyone (David?) had a drinking game in the number of times he bleated about the size of the lead singer (who was sexy as hell!) they would have been under the coffee table half way thru the episode.

Bert. Did not like at all. Thought the previewed Golden Girl's comment was for him. Loved the braids though.

Always fun to watch the designers freak out over men's wear, especially the female designers. While a fun change of pace the Rolling Stone pairing felt off - a plain old rock band wasn't the best choice - a Lady Gaga challenge would have really sung!

Two snoozle alert!!

The world's biggest labrador and the world's smallest labrador are all alert today as new workmen and new noises are here. Putting in edging for the flooring downstairs.

I wish, for you, no falling satellites

Thanks to the interwebz I now know people all over the country and the world. I hear about a hurricane and a number of people I know are in the way. Or a tornado. Or a snowstorm. Icy roads. I have concerns....
Now it seems we all have a 1 in 3,200 chance of getting bonked by a satellite. Stay safe, look up occasionally and we'll all scurry about the next couple of days.

New Halloween purchases! And a question.

Today the slate guy got done early. (The damage Tar did was minimal!) So I escaped! Went to the craft store and found a new gravestone for the haunted graveyard. It has glitter. And so do the gorgeous black spiders - all black glitter.
Next time I escape I'm heading to Barnes and Noble. Thinking about the color Nook. Does anybody have one? Being stuck with the renovators makes me realize how often I get stuck with NO new books. Horrors. Even B&N.com takes a couple days. I take to haunting the shipping info website - where is it now?

Tar's perfect storm for doggy disaster

The slate work.
Before The Incident.
We were not to walk on it last night.
GB brought the leashes up from downstairs (we have to go via the deck). Leashes make Tar go walkies crazy.
The Engineer chose that time to climb over the baby gate to go look at the slate.
Tar put 2 and 2 together and decided WALKIES!
Tar jumped over the baby gate,
took out The Engineer
and fell down the stairs landing on the slate
where he scrambled around on the 'do not touch' zone
while colorful language was expressed.

No broken bones, no sprain activity on his boo-boo, The Engineer is in one piece and best of all, the damage is minimal according to slate man.

I have come for you, Top Chef -

beings how you have sold your soul to the devil - again.

"The ninth season of Bravo’s hit franchise, “Top Chef,” brings something new to the kitchen with a cutting-edge transmedia play sponsored exclusively by Toyota, allowing viewers to follow story lines across multiple platforms. Original video content on digital platforms will directly impact the on-air storyline, and only by participating on multiple levels will fans get the whole story. Whether on mobile, web, tablets, social media or on-air, Bravo’s transmedia experience will incorporate a wide-reaching promotional strategy to drive users to engage and experiment with a new form of content storytelling."

Transmedia is a word not recognized on this media device. That says a lot right there.

More breathless thrills and chills PR here.

Grown just up the road here in SE WA. Just one of many that will be coming home this fall.

how gamers will save the world

I loves this story.

"Video-game players have solved a molecular puzzle that stumped scientists for years, and those scientists say the accomplishment could point the way to crowd-sourced cures for AIDS and other diseases."

It took them ten days.

Full article here.

Abby's secret stash

When Abby was smaller she used to disappear behind the sofa - something Tar could only do for about a week. Yesterday we moved the sofa to clean (in prep for carpet removal) and found her secret stash of toys - which includes three rocks (stolen from Tar Stoner Dude) and two pine cones.

Abby inspects the new floor downstairs

The faux wood flooring downstairs. Expect them to move upstairs sometime next week. It will be an...... adventure.
That's Abby inspecting the work.

How cute was Tim tonight? Project Runway

The Real Woman challenge can be problematic for the 98% of us who don't have model figures. You want to take a 'pizza cutter' to the shuddering designers. Tim's contributions lightened the whole episode. Loved the crickets at first when the men were asked simple questions.
And next week... who the heck are the Sheepdogs?

Have a little oompa in your loompa -

What a fun challenge! Great idea and I'm sure it was a lot of work to pull off - for both cast and crew.
I won't say anything more about it so as to not spoil any surprises. Just that Rebecca Masson had the best line of the night.

Abby on Dog Alert

The flooring is commencing! Abby spends her time supervising from behind the baby gate. Tar spends his time asleep on the bed. The Great Flood was April 18. My joke about a Thanksgiving deadline is not a joke anymore. 95% of the flooring will be replaced on two floors. The master bath overhauled, all new fixtures, cabinet and flooring.

Design Star - final episode

The person we thought would win - did. No surprises there.

The rooms were okay, as always, but still did not like them. My one concern - the family expecting a baby - Meg put the Budda statue on a pedestal and all I could think is it tipping over and beaning baby!

We are actually enjoying the show that debuted after Design Star - Showhouse Showdown. Really interesting to see how two designers tackle the same space - and time and money to do their style right.

Bravo TV, Top Chef and Healthy Choice - RUN! Save yourselves!

"Today, Bravo and Healthy Choice®, a brand of ConAgra Foods, Inc., announced the launch of the largest integrated marketing partnership in their respective histories.... Bravo is always looking for ways to constantly innovate, furthering the proliferation of the brand while bringing value to our viewers and advertising partners,... Simple, but moving, remembrances taking place across the country. One flag for everyone lost on 9/11 being placed here in SE WA.

It. Is. September. I Will Have Fall!

Temps still in the 90s but chrysanthemums are at the store. Geraniums and zinnas have been banished to a corner of the yard. I will be prowling for pumpkins soon.

More intervention needed - Project Runway - ep 7

Team Broken Spring needed a lot more help than even St. Tim could pull together. And it all came down to JoshM. Of course. By the time he had his emotional meltdown we could have cared less.

The make your own fabric challenge is always fun but did anyone hear that it was supposed to be just black and white? The video backdrop was barely mentioned - just enough so we could see the HP's capabilities. And the music? Crickets? Are we trying to cram too much sponsorship into one episode?

Wasn't surprised at who went home. "I need a vacation" summed it all up.
So the ones left will show at fashion week which is going on right now. Nine decoys. will be tweeting the show starting at 9.30am EST or 6.30am PST!

For the First Time in Just Desserts' History!!!

And Top Chef history.... a dog at the judging table going by the name of Jiggy.
Now we're all for dogs around here, and Tar can actually place his head *on* the table before he is told to get it OFF THE TABLE!, but we're not sure Jiggy has the chops to judge desserts. (One team did make a cute doggy biscuit for him. Tied with a pink ribbon.)

But first the SponsorFire! Let's make a new gum flavor! Apparently there is a dessert line of gums out there. I haven't chewed gum since elementary school and bubble gum so who knew? Everyone made a little bite of a dessert and one contestant won the chance to be in a gum off the company was having - bananas foster, rootbeer float and now a lemon pancake with a strawberry are in contention. And $25k....

Hugh of the UniBrow from Top Chef Masters was a guest judge this week. More about him later.

The challenge was to make a dessert table for one of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, Lisa Vanderpump. All the contestants seem to know all about the show. Daughter and I are convinced that the contestants were told to be familiar with certain Bravo/NBC shows and sponsors ahead of time.
One of the husbands came in (Real Husbands?) with the dog. Jiggy. He talked about his wife's love of pink, elegance and Jiggy.

The contestants had to make up a table with decor and pink desserts. At judging table they were joined by some of the other housewives and Pandora, daughter of Jiggy's owner (and David, Gail needs to step it up in the cleavage department after viewing the frontal square footage of this gal).

The tables were pretty, had stunning centerpieces and the desserts looked yummy. One team won and one team was dashed upon the rocks. Hugh of the Unibrow decided to play the bully and it was not pretty.

Design Star - ep 9 - teeny, tiny house

Each of the remaining contestants were presented with a small house, 86 square feet, to design.
Nobody told us but it seemed that they all got the same slender toilet, sink, microwave, fridge and single hot plate.
Additionally they all got HGTV carpenters (very loud and personable - which is starting to wear on me all this over the top personality). The carpenters tied in nicely with the next competition show (which The Engineer thinks will be interesting) - Top Carpenter or something like that.
Besides giving me a mild case of claustrophobia, it was interesting to see how they put together the space. You'd have to be young to live in these. Loft sleeping has no appeal at my age, ladders, trips to the bathroom...
I was surprised at who went home.

Abby learns about karma...

After breaking her brother (see previous post) Abby attempted to subdue a bee.
The bee protested.
By the end of an hour her entire snoozle on the right side was swollen.
We looked up dogs and bee stings on the interwebz and then gave her 5mg of anti-histamine.
Slowly went down. This morning just a bit of swelling at the base of her jaw.
If it is not one thing, it is another...

Saturday, September 3, 2011

Abby is sorry she broke her brother

Which is quite an accomplishment seeing as how he outweighs her by 50 lbs. (Tar 112, Abby 62).

Tar started limping, then he started going about on three legs. Off to the vet!

We did xrays, even did his hips (looking for hip dysplasia). No broken bones, hips look great. His tarsals (that kind of backward 'knee' on the hind legs of dogs) is swollen and they found a flat spot on one of the bones (congenital) that makes it easy to sprain. And that is what he has - a bad sprain.

It is Abby's habit to lay in wait for Tar and spring at him, even on the stairs, to gain the advantage her diminutive size does not afford. We are going to have to watch that. Tar, in the meantime, has an open prescription for anti-inflammatory and painkillers.

Even Teletubbies need clothes - Project Runway ep 6

If any woman could wear Bert's outfit Heidi Klum could!

I loved the participation of the art students, especially on the runway.

An avant garde challenge is always fun though the definition always seems to change. Looking up advant garde on google images and I can see Bert's outfit right at home.

Both daughter and I would like to know more about how Anthony Ryan handles his color blindness. It would be interesting to hear him explain out he goes about picking out colors and working with them. His artist steered him away from orange - smart girl.

Sad to see the auf-ee go home (or the luxury prison in which they are kept).

A 5 person team challenge next week?! I hope they have buckets of cold water standing by to toss on JoshM.
