Here, if you tuck your ears over like so...

you will look so seski! Tar as Hairdresser Dog.

Hedwig, is that you?

Girlfriend, five minutes from us, spotted this owl in her backyard Monday night.

Another Sunday, another thunderstorm

Abby out on the porch - actually growling at the thunder...

Tar, inside, someone is making bacon and this deserves our full attention.

I hope Smaug The Dragon doesn't live here...

This is the cave The Engineer is leading his group of kids into this weekend at Mt. St. Helens.
He will have to watch for hobbits, trolls and dragons. The other group is climbing the mountain, they'll watch for Sasquatch.

One of the boys from the basement

he's the one on the right, has formed a new band in CA and they are doing really, really well. I'm soooo not surprised. This kid is beyond talented. I have a big box of the first cd he, Eldest and friends made with their first band left over. Watch out, I could clean up someday...

How cold a spring is it?

So cold they are laying white tarp under the cherry trees to bounce light up into the branches.

We have met the enemy...

GB took this picture. A squirrel, Silicon Valley variety. Abby is worried. Tar is 'duuuuuude...'

Abby and Tar and The Law

We got a letter from the City Attorney threatening to fine us up to $500 a day for barking dogs!!!

Got on the phone immediately and talked to the woman who handles these matters. (Note - a thankless job and she was very nice.)
Turns out that some douchenozzle (thank you David for that phrase) has complained about every dog in a three block area.
I outlined everything we have done - the training collars, the fact that they worked, that I am currently unemployed (they are even cutting teacher salaries now in addition to getting rid of all support staff) so I KNOW they are not barking as I am home. I will now leave them inside when running errands in case they barked then.
I am sending copies of receipts, descriptions of the collars and will even get my neighbors to testify on our behalf! Including adorable pictures of Abby and Tar, taking advantage of every angle I can get!
The woman said that she was satisfied we were responsible owners. She appreciated the information for the file.

Moral of the story - keep all your receipts and invoices. Realize there are douchenozzles out there and you may need to keep your doggy out of jail.

Another frog has joined the pond

This little fellow is a Pacific Chorus frog. He is very small and very brave. He's brave because The Lady Bullfrog is so much bigger than he is. And bullfrogs eat other frogs. On the menu! They will also eat mice, snakes and birds. And Pacific Chorus frogs. The reason we know he is a he is that he has been croaking his heart out looking for love.
And Abby is on Total Dog Alert about it. So is Yappy Dog in the kiddy-corner yard. Froggy starts croaking and Yappy Dog starts yapping. I'm considering tossing Abby over the fence to deal with Yappy Dog.

It's a zoo around here, I tell you!

Puppy CSI - the case of the missing plants

I take pictures of everyday odds and sods to send daily emails to my parents. Here I planted some lobelia in with a sage brush that I saved from a crack in the sidewalk a couple years ago.
Mysteriously the lobelia disappeared.... this time I tracked the culprit - gardening dog, Abby, decided it looked better down on the grass. She must have moved them one by one.

Puppy CSI

Note the bottom stair. The most important stair in the campaign to get Tar to return to climbing up the stairs. Note it does *not* have the previously applied line of sandpapery tape on it.
Found. In the yard. The body, what is left of the very important sandpapery application.
The only question is who removed it....
Tar or Abby?

HRH The Lady Bullfrog

allowed me to take her picture today. The puppies finally wandered close enough and she lazily jumped into the pond. This time they looked at the water but soon lost interest. Amphibians don't hold the same thrall over them as squirrely mammals.

Abby and The Frog

Her Royal Highness The Lady Bullfrog has made her annual spring appearance
and Abby has met her.

Don't tell Abby I told you this.
First she barked,
then she backed up,
then she sat down and growled,
and then she backed up again.

When the bullfrog jumped from the bank into the pond Abby ran to the squirrel's
tree. Was she seeking the squirrel's protection? Did she think the frog had morphed into
the squirrel? All in all, Frog 1, Abby 0.

Today GB is off on an adventure

GB starts driving today to Silicon Valley to start a 3 month internship. We are very excited for him. He is going to stay, with another intern, at the house of an incredibly generous alum of the university he attends.

In the pool house... (which has the same square footage as our house...)

Top Chef Masters - what cut? what thumb?

So Jamie took all sorts of sh*t for cutting her hand and going to the ER. On tonight's Top chef Masters Mary Sue Milliken cuts off her thumb, the tip of it, and, whatever, toss it in the garbage. The whole proposal angle was cheesy.

Another flood

Only 16 feet over the normal level. The district is busy rerouting school buses. The wished for cancellation of school did not come about. I remember during one of Mt. St. Helen's more active minor eruptions all the kids asking, 'should we go home now?' More out of hopefulness than alarm. Snow days, flood days and volcano days.

Abby has formed an alliance

with the Magpies.
She has learned that certain calls mean a cat or squirrel is in our yard.
Tar thought the initial excitement was interesting but, really, is it worth all
the running around the backyard - duuude!

The storm that came on over on Saturday.

Operation Tar Stairs

The Engineer put sandpapery tape on all the steps coming up to the deck. Then we worked on bribing Tar to come up them again. So far..... a paw or two. The weather has stopped cooperating but as soon as it does the bribery commence-th again.

Lake Albertson

Two huge puddles left over from last night's storm.
We got 1.5 inches of rain (our annual total is 7 inches).
While we were there a yellow Hummer decided to take the
puddles at speed (roll eyes) and one of the managers came
out with fishing pole and posed for pictures.

Master, is that you?

Huge thunder and lightning storm. The first one the puppies have seen.
Guess who was out in the middle of it and then watched it from the slider?

A squirrel worthy of Abby's attention

Found this on my interwebz wanderings.

Reminded me of the squirrels at the University of Washington.
It was common to see students chasing squirrels who were absconding
with poorly guarded lunch bags.

Daughter lived in the tree tops in the International House, corner room.
She loved to open the windows. No screens. One day she was reading and
she heard a rustle-rustle-rustle....... looked up and saw a squirrel rummaging
through her snack stash. She screamed, the squirrel screamed....

In the middle of the scrub and sage brush. :-)

Who's a good little demon?

Her new dog bed.
It comes with a 90 day guarantee against chewing.
Second night in her nest she chewed a hole in it.
I'm almost proud.

Abby wants to sign up

Doggy soldiers were part of the raid. Story here.

Never wake a sleeping demon...

it may be the last thing you'll ever do.

Another Abby *Hobby*

She shreds her bedding. (Right here she's working on shredding Tar.) We've gone thru the dog beds, which are relatively tough, and are onto old pillows which, thankfully, I have a lot of. Today she managed to get back into her crate and get the current pillow out and shred it all over the backyard and the deck.
In his spare time, which he has none of, The Engineer plans to make her a bed out of Kevlar. No idea how he plans to do this. I have a 70 year old Singer sewing machine. It has never heard of Kevlar....
The Engineer says let her sleep in the crate with no padding at all. I can't do that. I think I'll run a google search for toughest dog bed ever made. Guaranteed! (Do you think I have to disclose that Abby is a Demon in disguise?)

Osama Bin Laden......

Sunday Chortle and update

This made me laugh - The Engineer threatened this when we found out how much of the flooring (almost ALL) and walls - yes WALLS! have to go. Mr. Estimater is wrastling with the insurance company (who have been very nice about it so far) and Mr. Scheduler for the Work Crew is coming by Tuesday.

I am in hog heaven - I have an excuse to get SOME PEOPLE around here to move on some things around here. Daughter went thru the books she keeps downstairs about three solid shelves worth donated how many??? ONE. The rest have been moved into garage storage for now. The Engineer can now see how many big boxes of hiking and camping gear he really has - the man can not pass up a camping gadget.

The Good Children, the two boys, are good about letting me manage their stuff. Eldest on his next trip home will willingly go thru his boxes - but only three are his....

Oh, and I'm getting a new bathroom vanity! Late 70s construction with a builder going broke and our appointments around here are the cheapest of the cheap.
