Great Road Trip continued

Last night the Huskies beat the Huskers and somewhere in the stadium was Eldest and friends. Today they travel to UCLA for a 1pm basketball game. We'll watch and see if we can spot him.

The Great Road Trip

Eldest and a bunch of 20-somethings are headed to San Diego. Their goal is the Holiday Bowl and their team is the University of Washington Huskies (go Dawgs!). My brother lives in SF and we have family in Southern Oregon, so there is rescue help, if needed. I will be in a chronic state of worry as that is what moms excel at. But I'm sure a good time will be had by all.

Another one down...

The Engineer is home. Daughter got up at 5am, breakfast, dressed, hair, makeup and then collapsed. We are now three down, one working. Eldest already had a cold when he arrived. He's back in Seattle after a two hour flight delay.

How do you know Christmas officially over?

When the puppies dismantle the tree.

Now The Engineer is sick

We is doomed!
Still have two working kids. Hopefully we can space this thing out.

I give up!

Yesterday things got worse with this damnable cold so going into minor care this morning. I need DRUGS - even though I'm taking everything under the sun that I can get over the counter. All I want for Christmas is to feel BETTER!

technology - we haz it

We switched from one satellite system to the next. Many more bells and whistles which has The Engineer and Gorilla Boy all happy and busy. I will make a note of changed channel numbers on an index card.... It just gets discouraging when your appliances are smarter than you.

The world is going to end in 2036 and the French are going to save us?

So there's this asteroid coming. Kind of close. On April 13, 2036. And it might hit us. And maybe we should do something about it. In the next five or six years?
The French, apparently, have an idea. Sounds good to me. The Russians have an idea too. But. They are the Russians, don'cha know...
And anything we do might make it worse. And we have to decide soon-ish rather than late-ish.
Just loves this kind of stuff.
Full story here.
(I apologize in advance to any French or Russian persons. I'm a product of my times.)

Little kids and beeeeeeeeeeeees, please!

I loves this kind of stuff!

It came with wobbly writing and hand-drawn diagrams, but an elementary school science project has made it into a peer-reviewed journal from Britain's prestigious Royal Society.

Biology Letters published a report Wednesday conducted and written by a group of 8- to 10-year-olds from an English elementary school investigating the way bumblebees see colors and patterns. The scientific organization — which is more than three centuries old and includes some of the world's most eminent scientists — said the children reported findings that were a "genuine advance" in the field of insect color and pattern vision."

Oh, noes! Romeo and Juliet and... nuts?

A nut by any other name?
House of Nutula?
Romeo, put down the nutcracker!
Alas David, parting is so saccharin.
Oh, well, let's throw some Hamlet in there.

This is a GOOD gift idea for kids?!

This little spy cam, along with a 'secret mission video watch', recording devices, and night vision binoculars are all being marketed to kids under the classification of SpyNet roleplaying toys. The packages show pictures of preteen boys. The toys are from Jakks Pacific Products.

And Associated Press, in our paper today, lists them as fun toys for techie kids.

Are they nuts? After we just had a suicide of a college kid who was secretly recorded?

Associated Press, you blew it. Jakks Pacific - how stupid can you get?

The worst piece of junk mail EVER

On the outside of the envelope it says: Free Pre-Paid Cremation!

oh. um. wow!

Inside - after making the argument for cremation, which has its merits, but jeeeeze....

Anyway, I can enter a drawing for a FREE cremation! Actually I can enter The Engineer, since it is addressed to him.... and I can send them my email address and phone number! We can discuss this over and over and over! They even list last month's winner so I when I run into her at the grocery store I can say, "Carol! I see you're all set up to make the big campfire!"

I'm just gobsmacked...

The non-tree event

We were supposed to get our new trees planted this weekend. No-Dig guy came and marked the buried electrical lines. Tree Man came and marked where the trees are supposed to go. Saturday was the day. Saturday we woke up to three inches of snow... AND IT IS NOT EVEN WINTER YET! Tree Man called - maybe in the New Year.

Grocery shopping with GB and the beer display...

And he almost fainted. This is a new display case. The beer in this case is from specialty breweries, craft breweries, in WA state. Some from his all time favorite. He got on his phone, he took pictures, he posted to his Facebook account. SPREAD the WORD!!! The boys were actually planning a road trip to Spokane, in January, to score some of this beer.

hot pepper fudge

So I am intrigued with the concept of jalapeno fudge and I'm branching out from there.... First
batch made and deemed NOT WORTHY! So cruising the interwebz, sending GB to the store and trying our second batch tonight.... (picture representative - am NOT going to make it green...)

puppy tree

In order to save the family ornaments (kindergarten masterpieces and such) we put together a puppy tree. Up off the floor with a puppy angel at the top.

He sous vide a hamburger!

Then he flamed a crust on it! And he deep fried mayo! And gelled ketchup into a square!
Nothing I would ever do.... but the beginning where he talked about how to make a perfect burger, like normal people would :-) and that was instructive. I like the science of food and how it works.

Daughter and Abby

We watched Despicable Me tonight. As soon as we saw the dog we declared it was Abby!

Abby attempts to return to her Master

Abby has earned the nicknames Demon Pixie, Demon Seed and The Devil's Spawn due to her overall fierceness in puppy battles in juxtaposition to her tiny size compared to her brother, Tar.

It has been confirmed by her constant attention to the fireplace. If allowed, we think she would climb inside.

The puppies were working away on brand new chewy bones whilst on the bed as Mom worked on the Christmas letter at her desk.

All of a sudden I hear a long RRRRIIIIIIPPPPPP! Abby had discovered FEATHERS! You can imagine how these things travel.... I have a sewing machine. I have no idea where it is at this moment....
